UN Concerned about the Procrastinated Nuclear Disarmament

United Nations is concerned about the procrastination of the nuclear disarmament as the nuclear powers of the world are not making any progress in this regard. This may undo the milestone treaty which is to be reviewed in the coming week. 190 countries so far have signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty and will be participating in the upcoming conference which will last for about a month and will focus on the reasons for the delay.

The United Nations high representative, Angela Kane, said that we are impeding our path which will lead to a world with nuclear weapons. She added that the nuclear powers are not abiding by the promise that they had made about the disarmament. She said this will addressing a meeting arranged by Institute of International Peace.

The Non-Proliferation Treaty came into being in the year 1968. It worked as a big negotiator between the 5 top nuclear powers of the world – United States, France, China, Russia and Britain – and the non-nuclear countries which had come to the agreement to not pursue their atomic weapons plans. However, it has been 45 years since the treaty came into effect and the states with no nuclear weapons have started becoming edgy about it.

Kane said that we have to make sure that the right message is passed to the non-nuclear countries that they have not been forgotten. The NPT conference delegates are working on the agreement which will prioritize the disarmament agenda. However, some experts are saying that there will be discord in the conference which will result in unfavourable outcomes.
