Some CIA’s employees tried to prevent torture of Maher Arar

Recently, a former spy, described the debate with the CIA, in which many colleagues were sure that they are punishing an innocent man. Thanks to the account from the John Kiriakou, a former CIA officer, there is some new information about 10 year old events, that cost a government $10 million and several lawsuits in the US.

During an interview of Kiriakou, an ex-spy, at his home, in Virginia, he described how he was the head of the counterterrorism operations in Pakistan (after 9.11) and his later actions that include questioning CIA about their use of torture. Apparently, for leaking some classified agency’s secret, he spent 2 years in jail. Kiriakou didn’t announce, did he had some connections with Canada’s spy agencies. On the other side, he said that revealing some details about other spies is a sin in the world of spies.

Kiriakou said that he is disgusting for the actions that included sending an engineer to Syria, where he was tortured. Arar was caught at the New York airport and thrown into the Syrian prison. During that year in prison Arar was locked into a small dungeon without windows and beaten!

During the torture, some CIA agents thought that Arar is innocent, but others believed that he is a member of al-Qaeda. After his release, he still hasn’t got an apology from the United States! The CIA refused to commentate this event, so did Arar. His lawyer said that his client is probably on a watch list! Maybe even worse thing is that his name continues to be smeared! Although, anything cannot fix this, Arar should get an official apology.
