Proposed Execution Of Australians On April 29 In Indonesia Brings Two Governments Face-To-Face

Indonesia has given a notice of 72 hours before a couple of Australian citizens are executed. United Nations Chief Ban Ki Moon said Indonesia should do whatever it can to stop the executions. Australian citizens Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan are members of a group of men arrested on charges of drug trafficking. A large part of the legal covenants in the law is from a Dutch legal system. An Indonesian firing squad is supposed to shoot down the offenders. This is going to include 10 drug people in custody for drug trafficking.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said in a conversation with Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio she was quite grieved at the short notice period granted to the convicts, although she was not sure of the proper notice period that ought to be given.

The news channel further reported directions being given to the in-charge of the executions to prepare grounds for the executions. The people involved in the task in Bali were instructed to mark the crosses supposed to be on the graves of the prisoners. The crosses are to bear the executed prisoners' names and the date of the execution, April 29.

Efforts are on at the diplomatic level between Australia and Indonesia to put off the executions. Bishop made an attempt to do so by contacting her Indonesian counterpart Retno Marsudi. Bishop said it is never too late to try.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Albott has also communicated with Indonesian President Joko Widodo in this context. Albott said the executions are not believed to benefit any party.

Those awaiting execution on April 29 include two young Australians, three men from Nigeria, four from Brazil, France, Ghana and Indonesia. A woman from Philippines is also likely to be executed.
