Obama’s Veto Powers At Heart Of Controversy Over Iran-US Nuclear Deal

There is a heated debate in the US Congress on the terms of the proposed nuclear deal with Iran. There is a host of amendments possible to the deal. The debate assumes significance in the wake of the framework agreement inked on April 2 taking the form of a comprehensive deal on June 30. The republic of Iran is involved with six other world powers in this context. The final deal is going to ease some economic sanctions crippling Iran's economy for a long time in exchange for Iran giving up some of its nuclear strength.

US Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif are to meet in New York while attending a conference on the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

In case of a successful deal being finalised on June 30, some of the economic sanctions operatives on Iran can be eased through Obama's executive authority. A joint effort on the part of the United Nations and the European Union is going to be required to remove other sanctions operative on Iran. Obama has the powers to waive sanctions imposed by the US Congress, but he cannot undo them by himself. The bill is going to impede Obama's ability to waive sanctions for 30 days. Moreover, if the deal is disapproved by the Senators, Obama is going to lose his powers to waive off sanctions completely.

His veto of the Congress' decision can restore his powers. But for this to happen, he has to make sure of the support of more than one-thirds of the Congress.
