Chile is all set to have a legislation passed that sanctions marital alliance between two individuals of the same gender. Chile joins the league of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay when it comes to same sex marriage. This is a hotly debated topic in legal and ethical forums all over the world. While many orthodox mindsets refuse to accept the concept of gay and lesbian relationships, it is perfectly acceptable to some.
Many countries in South America permit a union between two individuals of the same sex. Chile Preident Michelle Bachelet signed on the dotted line for giving the final touches to the new law which is to take effect in six months.
In the absence of such a legislation, differences between homosexual and heterosexual couples have cropped up. Once the law takes effect, there is to be a legal angle to the two types of couples. There are about 2 million people in Chile who are to be affected by the legislation.
In view of the absence of any such legislation, there is a discrimination meted out to people with different sexual orientations when it comes to the legal tangle. Such people are usually not allowed to visit their partners if one of them is hospitalised. They are not allowed to decide what is good for them in terms of medicine. They are also not allowed to take any decisions on the fate of their dead bodies.
The new legislation is going to change all this. All the gay and lesbian couples in the country are to be treated at par with other couples at the legal front.
