NATO General: We Should Employ All Means in Helping Ukraine

According to a top military NATO commander, the western countries should think about using all they can in an effort to help Ukraine. The tools include defensive weapons as well, he added. NATO had a meeting in Washington were the participants discussed whether to provide Ukraine with weapons in a bid to help them fight pro-Russian separatists who are allegedly backed by Moscow. When asked whether he was for or against sending defensive weapons to Ukraine, US Air Force General Philip Breedlove said that none of the United States' tools ”should not be off the table”.

Even though western countries have imposed sanctions on Russia following its annexation of the Crimea Peninsula, the fighting has continued. Breedlove said, without explicitly mentioning Russia, that Ukraine has been experiencing the bad impact from all sorts of tactics, including those of military, economic, diplomatic and information nature. He also said that both taking action and staying passive could have a destabilizing effect on Ukraine.

According to NATO intelligence, the situation in Ukraine is “disturbing” when it comes to military developments in the eastern part of the country, and there is also wide-spread concern that the ceasefire inked in Minsk is not being respected. Breedlove said is was obvious that actions of resupply, air defense, command and control, and constant arrival of equipment is taking place in Ukraine. He described the country's borders as extremely “porous”.
