ISIL Claims Responsibility for Texas Attack

ISIL Claims Responsibility for Texas Attack

Following a Sunday attack on a venue in Garland, Texas where the anti-Muslim exhibit was held, the Islamic State has claimed the responsibility for the shooting. The venue was exhibiting drawings of Prophet Muhammad. ISIL stated on its radio station Al Bayan that “two soldiers of the caliphate” carried out the attack. The statement said, among other things, that what is coming is “more grievous and more bitter and you will see from the soldiers of the Caliphate what will harm you, God willing.”

This is the first time ISIL has claimed responsibility for the attack carried out in the United States. ISIL controls large areas of Syria and Iraq. The media could not yet verify the statement independently.

The attack, during which a security guard was shot in the lower leg, took place outside the Mohammed Art Exhibit event at the Curtis Culwell Center in suburban Garland, Texas. Gunmen were killed by the police. The suspects were identified as Nadir Soofi and Elton Simpson. It has been reported that Simpson had tweeted a number of threatening messages prior to the attack. He used hashtag #texasattack.

Simpson was found guilty in 2010 for not disclosing the truth to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in a terrorism probe. He had said to the FBI that he had not talked about traveling to Somalia to take part in Jihad. Simpson was sentenced to three years probation.
