Cow-Slaughter Is The Only Solution To Problem Of Rising Bovine Population

Cow-Slaughter Is The Only Solution To Problem Of Rising Bovine Population

The logic given against cow-slaughter has been given a religious tinge. In a predominantly orthodox Indian society moving obstinately towards the next millennium, this has worked to gag the proponents of cow-slaughter. Very few in India can question religious tenets.

Considering that a cow has a life of about 15 years, it can yield milk for only about 6.5 years in about eight periods of lactation. Cows are rarely kept after five lactation periods.

It becomes uneconomical to keep an animal on stock after this. After all, it consumes a fair share of fodder and feed. Fodder for farmers is like petrol is for car owners.

Farmers prefer to keep a major part of fodder for animals which are more likely to give a high yield of milk. Cattle with potential to produce healthy calves are the next in line of preference.

So, cattle which cannot produce milk or which are beyond the age of reproduction are a major burden to farmers. The unwanted animal is usually found roaming city roads.

A decent solution to the problem is to allow slaughter of these animals. But the recent ban on cow-slaughter by the governments of Maharashtra and Haryana has made this not possible. The crux of the problem highlighted at this point is that farmers find it hard to rear cows and bovines after a certain period.
