Court In Pakistan Sentence Attackers Of Malala Yousufzai To 25 Years In Jail

Ten people have been sentenced to spend the rest of their lives in prison in Peshawar, Pakistan for their involvement in 2012 attacks on Noble Peace Prize-winning activist Malala Yousafzai. All 10 involved were sentenced to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment. Pakistani anti-terrorism judge Mohammad Amin Kundi passed the judgment following  a trial.

The arrests were made in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. They come about two years after the 15-year-old girl received a shot on the way home in a school bus.

Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attacks that left the young girl seriously injured. Yousafzai's attackers were on orders from their leader Mullah Fazlullah.  She moved to England following the attacks.

The young girl had taken up the  cause of  education of girls in her country. Taliban militants are against the education of girls. Girls are not supposed to be in school after the age of eight.

The Taliban have been notorious for the treatment meted out to females in their society. They forced women not to venture out unless clad in a burqa.

Members of the Taliban have been wary of their critic. She survived the attack only to become more vocal and ardent in her attack on established institutions that decried female involvement in the society.

Her efforts went on to make her the joint recipient of the Noble Peace Prize with India’s Kailash Satyarthi in 2014. She has a lot of other awards to her credit for being involved in the cause.
