Too many cameras in the U.K.

Tony Porter is the government appointed camera surveillance commissioner for England and Wales. Basically his job is to keep an eye on what goes one in the CCTV surveillance domain and make sure things run smooth. Mr. Porter is concerned about the situation of this domain and sees two problems with the way things are done nowadays.

One of the problems as Porter stated is that the public is not informed about the cameras and what they are supposed to do. He is concerned that there is more and more camera surveillance and it only seems to be increasing. Besides cameras mounted on poles and buildings, police men will now wear cameras and the police will also use drones with mounted cameras.

However, although the number of cameras in the U.K.is somewhere between 4 and 5.9 million, people are not correctly informed about the number and their effectiveness, as Porter continued to say. There is no exact number as the people and institution who were supposed to keep track of the cameras have not done so.

As Porter explains, this is an issue because there is no way of telling how many cameras are not operational and how many are useless. As he carries on to say, a lot of savings can be made by getting rid of ineffective cameras. The key is to find a balance between the correct level of surveillance and the correct number of cameras, as overkill is not lucrative. This is quite big coming from the man who oversees the biggest network of CCTV cameras in the world.
