The official ‘Je Suis Charlie’ app

The official ‘Je Suis Charlie’ app

Since Monday you can show your support for freedom of speech through a smartphone app. This app was created in wake of the shootings at the French magazine Charlie Hebdo and since Monday morning it has over 44,000 downloads. The app was developed by developers in Toronto, Canada and is currently available only on iPhone.

The tag line ‘Je suis Charlie’ – ‘I am Charlie’ – has become a symbol for freedom of speech and has become a worldwide phenomenon. Apple is known to have supported the cause before by adding a banner to their website with the famous writing. So now when the app developers contacted the office of Tim Cook, CEO of Apple asking for a speedier approval of the app they received an answer within 10 minutes from his assistant saying that Cook would review the app in 1 hour tops. The normal route would take around 10 days which is considerably longer.

It was important to get the app on the market as soon as possible so it could be available for the meeting going on in Paris. It turns out that most of the users are from France, the cities being unknown though. For each user checking in a black tag with a hand holding a pencil is added to the world map and at this point France is virtually covered in tags.

The app seemed to work just fine when it was launched however issues have appeared shortly after the app was launched and it is believed that it’s due to an overload in the app servers caused by the rally in France.
