Signatures Sought On Petition For Nasheed’s Release To Go To Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen

A campaign involving a petition for the release of former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed has been launched by members of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). The petition is to be submitted to the incumbent President Abdulla Yameen. Being president, Yameen is in a position to grant pardon to the former president.

MDP members are doing all they possibly can to garner support for Nasheed's release. The petition has no deadline. So, MDP members are to go collect signatures from all over the country to collect signatures for Nasheed's release. In this context, a copy of the aforesaid petition has been posted on the party’s website too.

The party set up extensive demonstrations all over the island nation to protest against the arrest of their leader. The arrest had brought in criticism from the international fora too.

Nasheed was sentenced to 13 years of imprisonment after he was found guilty of illegally detaining a former judge of the court. Considering his prior record of conviction of perjury and theft, the court had concluded him to be the mastermind behind the arrest.

Nasheed’s political career has been cut short by a law passed by the incumbent Parliament in Maldives. The new law makes convicts not eligible to contest elections to any governmental post. So, Nasheed shall not be able to contest the next presidential elections in the country scheduled for 2018. moreover, the law also strips him of his party membership in view of his conviction. The new law has been decried by supporters of Nasheed.
