Serbia Could Stop Benefiting from EU Sanctions Imposed on Russia

Serbia Could Stop Benefiting from EU Sanctions Imposed on Russia

Although the European Union has imposed sanctions on Russia, there are still several European countries who benefit from their trade with Russia. One of them is Serbia, which is not a member-state. The country's exports of apples to Russia have jumped 48 percent (118,000 tons).

However, there are rumors that Russia could ban import of fruit and vegetables from Serbia altogether. It has been stated by some unofficial sources that Serbia has ten days to give Russia satisfactory answers. Minister of Trade Rasim Ljaljic said Serbia “has nothing to hide from Russia”. "No possibility should be ruled out in advance, and whatever information we obtain, we will tell our partners," he added.

Even though Serbia is benefiting from EU sanctions, there have been talks in the past saying Serbia is importing fruit from the European Union and selling it with Serbian labels, which is a direct violation of the free trade agreement between Serbia and Russia.

There have been concerns in Russia regarding the increase in apple imports from Serbia, with certain media reporting that Russia could therefore ban all import of fruits and vegetables due to possible irregularities. Russian Agriculture Ministry said in a statement that the apples coming from Serbia are actually Polish, giving Serbia ten days to clear that rumors.

Some media claim that the illegal trading is done via Belarusian companies.
