The Alaska has been at the focal point of the green activist since the controversial sea drilling plans by Shell. The activists have been shouting about the destruction of complex ecology of the region due to the same. Now scientists based in Alaska are exploring the reasons behind nine fin whales’ death. The bodies were found in waters betwwen Kodiak and Unimak Pass last month.
The species is already endangered. Mammal specialist Kate Wynne from the Alaska Sea Grant said that this is very rare event and sparks curiosity. The incident is expected to happen during Memorial Day Weekend. She is also a professor at University of Alaska, Fairbanks. She further added that they have never witnessed more than one fin whale bodies every two years.
70 feet long creature has been added to IUCNs red list. The marine animals use mouths to eat small fish, strain copepods and krill in the ocean. The researchers speculate the reason behind the death might to food poision. These whales eat in groups and consumption of the toxic substances may have resulted in death of everyone.
The researchers also discovered one dead humpback whale at other place. The mystery has become darkers because they all died at same time and are from same species. But why only fin whale bodies have found ? Technically such toxic food item should affect many creatures in the ecosystem. The two carcasses came out of water on shore. The samples are still under investigation at lab. Investigators are looking for the traces of biotoxins.
