Nasheed Loses Faith In Judiciary, But His Followers Continue To Have Faith In The Almighty

Former Mauritian President Mohamed Nasheed has been let to appeal against the judgment of a 13-year imprisonment by a trial court in connection with charges of terrorism. The team of lawyers representing Nasheed and his case in court are of the opinion Nasheed has lost faith in the impartial judgments made by the country’s judicial system.

Nasheed’s trial was mired with a lot of controversies. It was said to be conducted in a hurried manner leaving his legal representatives little or no time to prepare grounds for their client. His lawyers were not given access to the details of the case in time too. The trial was heavily criticized at the international fora too.

An amendment in the laws of Mauritius make sure Nasheed is not able to contest the next presidential elections scheduled for 2018. The law states that convicts are not able to contest elections. He was even stripped of his membership of the Maldivian Democratic Party by virtue of the new law.

Nationwide protests and demonstrations were organized in view of the former president being in judicial custody. Nasheed has lost favour with the incumbent home minister Umar Naseer. Naseer said he is not going to plea before The Almighty for relief to Nasheed.

Culmination of Friday prayers saw mobilization of people outside the Islamic Centre in Male. They had gathered to participate in a session supposed to make a dua for Nasheed’s release from detention. Umar was not a part of the congregation although some photographs had been clicked while he was on his way.
