Lakhvi’s Release From Jail For Lack Of Sufficient Proof Draws International Criticism

Lakhvi’s Release From Jail For Lack Of Sufficient Proof Draws International Criticism

The release of Mumbai terror attack mastermind Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi by a court in Pakistan has drawn sharp criticism from international quarters. He was housed in Pakistani garrison city of Rawalpindi. The 55-year-old allegedly masterminded the entire operation involving 10 LeT men from a base in Pakistan.

The officials reminded Pakistani officials of their commitment to fight terrorism. Pakistan's commitment to bring to book all perpetrators, financers, and sponsors of the attack on Mumbai is being questioned.

The attacks on Mumbai claimed the lives of over 166 people, which included six American nationals. The attacks also left over 300 injured. Lakhvi finds himself in jail since December 2008. A trial has been on since 2009. Lakhvi walked free when the Lahore High Court failed to find evidence enough to convict him.

Lakhvi's release is being criticized by different nations in their own way. French President Francois Hollande expressed shock and apathy at the move by the Pakistani government. Israeli Ambassador here Daniel Carmon also expressed resentment against the move as the attack involved Israeli nationals too. The Jewish Centre---Nariman House--- was also among the targets of terrorists attacking Mumbai on November 26, 2008.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condemned the release of Lakhvi insisting on global cooperation to counter terrorism. He quoted attacks on Paris in January 2015 as an instance. The move to release Lakhvi is a pointer towards Pakistan's sponsor of terrorism.

The truth that terrorists as Lakhvi walk free without any trouble is quite troublesome for promoters of peace in the region.
