Iraqi Troops, Militia Retake Strategic Town of Tikrit from Islamic State

On Tuesday, Iraqi troops together with militias retook the town of al-Alam which was under the control of the Islamic State militants, clearing what was perceived by many analyst as a hurdle in their plans of launch an offensive against the Islamic State who are currently in control of Saddam Hussein’s home city of Tikrit.

In what is viewed as their biggest offensive yet against the Islamic radical group, more than 20,000 troops as well as Shi’ite Muslim militias popularly known as Hasid Shaabi in Iraq who are backed by the Sunni Muslim tribes will be launching an offensive against the Islamic State in Tikrit in an attempt to reclaim it.

If indeed they will be successful, Tikrit will be the first city that has been retaken from the Islamic State militants by the Iraqi troops together with the Shi’ite Muslim militias. In addition to that it will also give them momentum as well as courage which will be needed for their next offensive against the radical-group which will see them trying to recapture Mosul.

According to a Reuters, the families which had left the city fearing the worst from the Islamic State militants could be seen coming back while celebrating the victory by the Iraqi troops. To add on to that they also slaughtered cows and goats for the Iraqi troops.
The mayor of al-Alam, Hashid Shaabi, confirmed the reports on the ground stating that the authority was now in charge of things in al-Alam.

"I announce officially that the town is under the total control of security forces, the Hashid Shaabi (Popular Mobilization) units and local tribal fighters," he said adding that, "we rejoice in this victory and we want al-Alam to be the launchpad for the liberation of Tikrit and Mosul."
