Hosni Mubarak’s sons released

Hosni Mubarak’s sons released

It’s been four years since the former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak has been removed from his position. And it’s only now, one day after the anniversary that his two sons, Gamal and Alaa, have been released from prison.

Seeing how the two haven’t been trialed yet they couldn’t have been kept in detention anymore having served the maximum period, therefore a court ordered their release. The brothers are however pending trial together with their father in the same case for embezzlement.

Before the regime being overthrown Alaa was a member of the business elite and Gamal was one of the leading members of the NDP (National Democratic Party). Mubarak’s overthrow was mostly due to the belief that he amassed large amounts of money illegally, with the help of his two sons.

Following the ousting of Hosni Mubarak, the two brothers were trialed and convicted with billing the government large sums of money, amounting to $14 million. The sentence and conviction were overruled this month on the basis that procedures were not followed and a retrial was commended.

Sunday, the day before the release of the brothers, has seen another series of clashes between the anti-government protesters and law enforcement groups. The main reason behind this was commemorating the fourth anniversary since the change in regime and also due to the unrest created by the news of Alaa’s and Gamal’s liberation. Although this should not have come as news to anyone it seems to have created a new state of unrest in Cairo, which will probably exist until the final sentence.
