David Cameron Wants Tougher Laws to Ban Muslim Brotherhood

David Cameron Wants Tougher Laws to Ban Muslim Brotherhood

According to some sources, British Prime Minister David Cameron will propose changing the laws regarding the ban of extremist groups like Muslim Brotherhood, a move that Egypt already made. Currently there are no laws in the United Kingdom which allow prohibition of dangerous groups. Downing Street claims that UK laws are to narrow to oust extremist groups. Namely, only if there is proof that the group is involved in terrorist activities, it can be banned.

This plan emerged from Number 10 after the decision to postpone publishing of a review on activities of the Muslim Brotherhood. The review was led by the UK ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Sir John Jenkins. It was launched last year following pressure to make moves that Saudi Arabia and Egypt already made. Both countries have banned Muslim Brotherhood.

The UK government says that the review, alongside government's comments, has been postponed until ministers complete work on a separate review of the country's counter-extremist policy. The process is delayed due to a row between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats on whether extremist preachers should be banned from giving speeches at universities. While Conservatives hold that the ban is the right move, the Liberal Democrats claim it infringes freedom of speech.

According to a source, the change of law is being seen as the United Kingdom trying to appeal to Gulf countries which really want the Muslim Brotherhood to be banned.
