Canadians Take A Step To Green Future With Renewable Fuel

Canadians Take A Step To Green Future With Renewable Fuel

SBI BioEnergy, Inc. took the first steps towards the establishment of a refinery worth $10 million in Edmonton Industrial Park in Edmonton, Canada. The proposed refinery is to produce fuel in the form of diesel and jet fuel from fat and grease.

The pulp and paper industry is known to give out a considerable quantity of vegetable oils and animal fats as by-products. The plan is to harness technology to make a judicious use of these by-products of the industry to make diesel and jet-fuel. This paper and pulp industry is going to be a renewable source for the same. Around 10 million litres of bio-fuel is expected to be produced every year by the plant. This is close on the heels of the company's goal to produce about 240 million liters of fuel in a year by 2018.

The process of conversion does not involve the use of water, or hydrogen. It does not generate any waste either. Energy is recovered from the waste material, besides being recycled in another form.

This is yet another step towards helping out the world which is coming to grips with the situation where the reserves of petroleum are to last a couple of centuries more. Burning of fossil-fuel has also given way to a lot of greenhouse gases. All this can be relieved by the renewable diesel produced by this method. Higher concentrations of biodiesel can even be used as regular fuel.

Canadian refineries prefer using renewable diesel rather than normal bio-diesel because of its compatibility with the infrastructure in the refineries. They have  distribution systems and engines tuned to the renewable source.
