The recent terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels resonated around the world, and were some of the deadliest carried out within the west since 9/11. Following the attacks, authorities have gone after those responsible; not just to achieve justice, but even more importantly, to gain information regarding potential future attacks.
The latest development was the apprehension of Mohamed Abrini. It’s said that he was involved in the Paris attacks, and was also filmed on tape with two suicide bombers in the Brussels attacks that followed. Having Abrini in custody is a huge boon to the authorities.
Reporter Nic Robertson explained, "For French investigators, this can be very big. This gives you a much stronger position to be in to get to the truth ... to (track) other terrorists on the run down. And also to understand precisely what happened in Paris."
Evidence that points to Abrini’s involvement is plentiful. Footage showed him with Salah Abdeslam, who was also involved in the Paris attacks. Abrini’s fingerprints were also found on a vehicle used in those attacks. He does have a criminal record, and his brother died while fighting for ISIS in 2014.
Since being taken into custody, Abrini has admitted to being present at the Brussels bombing. Officially, he has been charged with terrorist murders and participation in the activities of a terrorist group. Three other men involved in the attacks have also been arrested; hopefully, the information obtained through them can help stop any attacks that are currently being planned.
